 KOLKATA: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a senior doctor of government-run Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) in Murshidabad of West Bengal on graft charges.

The accused, Dr Tapan Kumar Jana, was caught red-handed accepting ₹10 lakhs as bribe for allegedly issuing a favourable inspection report from National Medical Commission (NMC) to a private medical college at Belgavi in Karnataka.

The doctor is the head of the department of anatomy in MMCH. He is also an assessor at the NMC. Around ₹54.60 lakhs in cash, including the bribery amount, and some incriminating documents were recovered from him and his palatial residence at Hatishal in Meethapukur of Burdwan town after a night-long raid and search.

Dr Saha’s wife is also a doctor. She is posted at a reputed government medical college in Kolkata. She was present at the residence during the raid and search.

On Saturday, the CBI registered a case against three accused including Dr Jana, two other individuals and the private medical college in Karnataka after getting a complaint of a ₹10 lakh-bribery demand.

At night, the CBI sleuths from the anti-corruption branch laid a trap and caught Dr Jana red-handed while accepting the bribe from the representatives of the private medical college. They later conducted the raid and search from 11 pm to 7 am on Sunday.
