KOLKATA-BERHAMPORE: A day after the deaths of two murder accused in two separate police encounters in two districts of West Bengal, family members of the deceased, Prahlad Das and Samaul Sheikh, opposed and questioned their extra-judicial killings in the course of reconstruction of crime they had allegedly committed.

Rekha Das, the aggrieved mother of Prahlad who was shot dead at Gaighata in North 24 Parganas for snatching the service revolver of a cop, alleged on Wednesday, “When my son was brought to the spot in our neighborhood at around 2 am on October 27, his hands were tied. There were five cops with firearms surrounding him.”

She claimed, “How could my son snatch the weapon of one of them when his hands were tied? Think about it. Like the girl, my son was also killed. We demand compensation” before breaking down in tears while showing her son's uniform of the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

“He joined NCC, while pursuing his studies at Gobardanga Hindu College, to prepare himself for his dream job of police. It was however his ill-fate that he had to die in a police encounter,” Ms Das lamented. Her husband, Ramprasad, said, “I know my son committed an unpardonable crime. However the cops could have put him in jail for life instead of taking his life. The killing can not be accepted.”

Meanwhile, the body of another murder accused, Samaul Sheikh, who was also killed in a police encounter at Shamshergunj in Murshidabad on Tuesday on the same excuse, was handed over to his family members after the post mortem at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday. The victim's brother, Ataul Sheikh, said, “It was the choice of the police to do whatever they wanted. But they should have put him on trial first.”
