Eight Class 5 students were injured on Wednesday when a section of a concrete ceiling slab collapsed inside their classroom at a government school in Karnataka’s Bagalkot district, officials said.

According to officials, the children were seated at their desks during a regular lesson when a portion of the reinforced cement concrete (RCC) ceiling suddenly detached and crashed down.
The injured pupils were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Doctors reported that the students sustained minor to moderate injuries, and their conditions are stable with no serious casualties reported.
Following the mishap, senior education department and revenue officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Authorities have ordered a comprehensive structural stability audit of the entire school building and directed immediate repair work. Classes scheduled in the damaged wing have been temporarily relocated to ensure student safety until a clearance certificate is issued.
The incident has once again turned the spotlight on the structural integrity and upkeep of ageing government school buildings across the state, particularly during the monsoon period when seepage and moisture weaken older concrete infrastructure.
