Three tourists hurt in Rameswaram accident

The police have also arrested the driver, Rasool Raja, 42 and son of Noor Muhammed of Kovilpatti, of the cement-laden lorry that caused the accident.

Rameswaram: At least three tourists including the driver of a tourist bus were seriously injured when the vehicle, hitting a speed-breaker on the Pamban road bridge suddenly capsized in the early hours of Sunday. Police said that the tourist bus, with 20 tourists-cum-pilgrims from Tirupur was returning home after visiting places of importance in Rameswaram Island when the mishap occurred. 

Passing over a speed-breaker on the Pamban road bridge, the driver of the vehicle suddenly lost control and it flipped to one side, sources said. The injured were brought to Rameswaram government hospital for treatment. The driver of the tourist bus who suffered a severe leg fracture has been shifted to the Government Headquarters hospital in Ramanathapuram, sources said. 

Meanwhile, the Northeast monsoon rains continued to hit Rameswaram Island sporadically. The chief amounts of rainfall (all in mm) recorded at key places for the last 24 hours ending 0830 hours on Sunday were: Thangachimadam 11.80, Rameswaram town 8.20 and Pamban 7.
