Tech student beaten to death in Anantapur

Anantapur: A third year mechanical engineering student, M. Dhanaraj, 21, was beaten to death by his classmate at SRIT Engineering College in B.K. Samudram mandal in the district on Monday. The student collapsed at once after being kicked on the head.

Witnesses said students from the third year mechanical engineering course had planned a farewell function for final year students. K. Vamshi Reddy, resident of Second Road area in Anantapur and a day scholar at the college, led the collection of funds at Rs 600 per third year student.

Dhanaraj, resident of Maruthinagar, was in the third year of the same branch; he was actually one year senior but had stayed back because of backlogs and poor attendance last year. When Vamshi Reddy asked Dhanaraj for his contribution, both had an argument in the class but the quietened down when the lecturer arrived.

After the class ended, both quarrelled again. Vamshi Reddy kicked Dhanraj hard in the head, and the latter fell at his desk and collapsed.

The college management and other students shifted Dhana-raj to a nearby private hospital but the doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been shifted to Anantapur general hospital. Dhanaraj’s mother Jyothi said the college management did not respond properly about the incident and told her that nothing had happened when she contacted them on phone. SRIT college chief executive officer A. Jaganmohan Reddy observed that the incident happened in the gap between two periods. Previo-usly there were no differences between the duo, he said.

Accused Vamshi Reddy surrendered before the B.K. Samudram police soon after the incident and said that what happened was not intentional.

Police detained another student as well, sources said. Anantapur DSP K. Mallikar-juna Varma said a case has been registered against Vamshi Reddy based on complaint by his mother under sections IPC 302 and also SC/ST atrocity case. Additional forces have been posted on the college premises to avoid untoward incident.
