Srikakulam seaman dies in accident at US port

Visakhapatnam: A seaman from Srikakulam district, T Ravi Kumar (35) of M. Sunnapalle village under Santhabommali mandal, died while working on a container ship at the Port of Los Angeles in the USA on Wednesday.

M. Sunnapalle sarpanch S. Narayana said they have received a message from the container company that Ravi Kumar had died on the spot when he fell 50 feet down on the deck while working on the container. The exact reason for the fall from the structure is yet to be ascertained.

According to his family members and relatives, Ravi Kumar, their sole breadwinner, had worked as a welder for over seven years before joining as seaman. He is survived by his mother, wife and two daughters – Anu and Pallavi. He is the youngest among four brothers, two of whom also died in tragic incidents a few years ago.

The sarpanch said they are approaching the district administration to take steps for speedy completion of legal formalities, so that Ravi Kumar’s body could be brought to the village for last rites.
