Hyderabad: Malkajgiri techie held over dowry

As the bride’s family expressed their helplessness, they were threatened and the marriage was called off.

Hyderabad: Greed for additional dowry has landed a software engineer in jail in the city on Monday. The techie had called off the marriage, as the bride’s family expressed their helplessness to pay additional dowry of Rs 5 lakh, said Malkajgiri police, who arrested the accused on Monday.

According to Malkajgiri police, the accused Gajagiri Nikhil Kumar, 32, a software engineer living at Singareni Colony in Champapet of Malkajgiri got engaged to K. Haripriya,  who works as an assistant manager with HDFC Bank in the city on April 26 this year. The marriage was fixed on May 19.

When the talks between the two families took place before the engagement, the bride’s family had given Rs 5 lakh towards dowry and promised to give five tolas of gold during the marriage. However, a day before the marriage, the accused and his family members have demanded Rs 5 lakh more towards additional dowry. As the bride’s family expressed their helplessness, they were threatened and the marriage was called off.

The woman’s father then lodged a complaint with Malkajgiri police that they have distributed the wedding invitations to all their relatives and the groom’s family has cheated them, said the police.

Malkajgiri police registered a case and arrested Nikhil.
