Kerala: Mother in judicial custody for torturing child

Kottayam: Seleena Nazeer, the woman  who allegedly tortured her ten-year-old son, Naufal,  was remanded in judicial custody till September 8 by the Devikulam Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Friday. Seleena,   a native of Adimali, was taken to the women’s sub-jail in Thrissur with her three-month-old baby girl. Earlier, the Adimali police recorded her arrest and  presented her before the Devikulam JFMC. Adimali Circle Inspector T.A. Younus told DC that the  baby  will also be entrusted with the woman as the Swadhar shelter home at Thodupuzha had refused to accept the child without her mother.

Idukki district Child Welfare Committee had on Thursday entrusted  Mohammad Haneef, 9, the younger brother of Naufal, with the Swadhar shelter home. “The presence of the child with the woman  has been mentioned in the remand order,” Mr Younus added. Cases were charged against the accused under the provisions of section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (punishment for cruelty to child)  and for inflicting burn injuries on the child. The same cases were registered against her husband Nazeer. The police had sought the custody of   Nazeer  who is now in  jail for possessing ganja.  Naufal is undergoing treatment at the MCH, Kochi.
