Police arrest six-member gang of CD Mani at Mambalam

Police however refused to divulge the details of the gang's target.

Chennai: A six-member gang belonging to don, C.D. Mani, was arrested along with weapons by the police during Saturday night patrol at Mambalam, police said on Sunday. The night also saw Chennai city police commissioner doing a round in the city.

Police identified the arrested men as S. Vetrivel, 25, his brother S. Jayaganesh, 29, of Mugaippair, B. Ganesan, 25, CIT Nagar, P. Sekar, 38, G. Maheswaran, 23 of CIT Nagar, B Panchaksharam, 32, of Nandanam. The police also seized four sickles, clubs from them besides a car in which they were traveling when the night patrolling team intercepted the vehicle on Saturday night at Mambalam.  

Police said two brothers arrested were facing cases including attempt to murder while Ganesan was facing a kidnap case and Panchakram was facing a murder case. Maheswaran was an important informer for Mani.

Police however refused to divulge the details of the gang’s target. Meanwhile, the city police commissioner T.K. Rajendran decided to stay awake on Saturday night and did a night round from 11 pm to 5 am to directly supervise the patrolling.

He visited places like Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Central station, Royapuram, Thiruvotriyur, Ennore, Vysarpadi, MKB Nagar, Otteri, Villivakkam, JJ Nagar and Puzhal among other places.

The city police chief during surprise night rounds gave instruction to patrolling team on various issues including handling suspicious persons and victims of road accidents.

During Saturday night’s intensified patrolling, the police arrested 23 history sheeters, 3 ex-convicts and booked 77 motorists for drunken driving.
