Chennai: A 54-year-old woman and her son who had travelled from Salem allegedly jumped into the sea at Marina beach on Friday morning in an apparent suicide pact. While she drowned, her 25-year-old son was rescued by the patrol police.

According to police, Revathi was living with her husband Selvakumar (60) and son Shanmugapriyan in Ammapettai Udayar Colony at Salem. Shanmugapriyan is an MBA graduate and is working as a lecturer in a private co-operative institute at Salem.

Police said that Revathi and her husband used to quarrel incessantly. On Thursday night, Revathi and her son boarded a bus from Salem to Chennai to end their lives. After reaching Chennai early in the morning, they travelled to Marina beach. At around 6.30 am, they went deep into the sea just behind the Aringar Anna memorial to end their lives.

A constable who was patrolling the area found the two of them entering the sea. He immediately entered the sea and rescued Shanmugapriyan but was not able to save Revathi who was dragged away by huge waves.

Revathi's body was fished out at about 8 am with the help of fishermen and sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital while Shanmugapriyan was taken to the Royapettah hospital for treatment. The Anna Square police have registered a case and further investigations are on.
