Chennai Police seize 500 kg gutka

Police said a man named Poovalingam was involved in running the business transporting tobacco items to various places in city suburbs.

Chennai: Two persons were arrested and 500-kg of banned gutka and tobacco products were seized from a godown in Pallavaram on Tuesday night.

The Police said a man named Poovalingam was involved in running the business transporting tobacco items to various places in city suburbs.

A special police team was formed by Shankar Nagar Police to crack the illegal supply of gutka and other banned tobacco products in the Pallavaram, Chrompet, Shankar Nagar and Tambaram areas.

On Tuesday evening, during a vehicle check, the special team intercepted, Rajesh (25) riding a moped. He was evasive in his replies and appeared to be nervous after which the team searched his moped. During the check, police seized a box of gutka from him. Based on his inputs, police searched a private godown in Suriamman Kovil street in Pammal, Pallavaram and seized half a tonne of gutka and tobocco.

The owner of the godown, P.Poovalingam (50) of Eshwara Nagar was arrested, police said adding that the man smuggled gutka products from
Karnataka.
