Nellore: A sub-inspector attached to Marturu town in Prakasam district, V. Nagamalleswar Rao, sustained stab injuries when unidentified goons attacked him with a knife on the national highway near the toll plaza at Bollapalli in Marturu mandal of Prakasam district after midnight on Sunday.

According to police officials, they have been keeping a tab on the area following frequent robberies from lorry crew between Mederametla and Marturu by some gangs from Odisha and Rajasthan.

As the modus operandi of the gang is to target those sleeping on their vehicles parked on the roadside, Nagamalleswar Rao along with two home guards was acting as if they are sleeping in a car to nab goons.

As expected, the gang surrounded the car and attacked the inmates. One of the gang members stabbed the SI below his neck and close to the chest after he caught hold of one of them.

Though he intended to open fire, the sudden attack paralysed the officer. Moreover, the home guards allegedly fled from the scene after noticing the robbers wielding weapons. The gang also escaped from the scene after the commotion alerted passersby.

Chirala DSP Prem Kajal said they had formed 5 teams to nab the gang. She suspected the role of same gang behind stabbing a car driver with a screwdriver few months ago. The gang took Rs 6,000 from the driver then.
