Karimnagar: Former chairman of the Agricultural Marketing Committee, Tummeti Sammi Reddy, on Sunday, urged Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy for ensuring an inquiry into the illegal sand quarrying by the mafias — during the previous BRS regime — in the Manair river in the name of de-silting process. The illegal extraction of sand was going on unabated and it covered a large portion of the river, alleged Reddy, adding that action must be taken against those involved in the illegal activities.

Accompanying farmers, Sammi Reddy conducted an inspection of the sand quarrying area at Jammikunta and thereafter a Press meeting was organized, wherein he told reporters about the alleged “shady activities” in Jammikunta mandal of Huzurabad in Karimnagar district.

Briefing media persons, Reddy alleged that without constructing check dams, the BRS leaders connived with officials of the Telangana State Mineral Development Corporation (TSMDC) and contractors and extracted sands from the riverbed not only in Veenavanka and Jammikunta mandals but also at several places in united Karimnagar district. They carried out illegal sand mining in the name of de-siltation and pocketed several crores of rupees through illegal means, Reddy stated.
