Hyderabad: Impromptu race leads to accident

Passengers in car and tractor driver were inebriated.

Hyderabad: The death toll in the road accident at Kandukur on the city outskirts rose to four with the death of two persons who were undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital on Monday.

The accident took place on Sunday evening when a group of people including two police constables were returning to the city after partying at Maisigandi, 55 km from here.

The car was carrying six persons, all of whom were drunk. The tractor was carrying about 30 persons, including 15 children, and its driver was also drunk.

The speeding SUV (TS 11 EH 9001) driven by Malkapet constable K. Vinod Kumar rammed into a tractor (TS 07 UE 1053) about 2 km from Kandukur and then hit an electricity pole before coming to a halt. The overturned due to the impact, about 30 persons who were in the trailer were thrown on to the road.

Kandukur inspector E. Jangaiah said, “Vinod Kumar was stuck in the car for a very long time. Five others who were present in the car also suffered injuries and one person in the tractor also received critical injuries.”

He said that Vinod was racing with another car in which another group of friends was moving, when the accident occurred.

“On reaching the spot, we called for ambulances, but we were told that they may take about one hour to reach. The injured persons were rushed to the Maheshwaram government hospital for the first aid and shifted to Osmania General Hospital,” Mr Jangaiah said.

Apart from Vinod Kumar, 28, the dead included A. Eshwar, 29, Narayanguda constable N. Shivakumar, 27, and Dara Yadaiah, 50, of Ibrahimpatnam, who was in the tractor. The injured persons were identified as T. Sri Krishna, G. Naresh, Naveen Kumar of the city, and G. Anjaiah of Yacahram. They are stated to be out of danger. A case has been registered against the tractor driver under Section 304A of IPC. The bodies were handed over after autopsy at OGH.
