HYDERABAD: A scuffle led to a clash between police and locals, who were staging a protest after a man was killed on the spot by a biker near RGIA in Shamshabad on Saturday. Hundreds of locals blocked the road demanding extension of the flyover to make it easy for pedestrians to cross the busy road.

It all started when a 60-year-old Yadaiah from Siddhanti village died on the spot after being hit by a speeding bike while crossing the road late Friday night. After rushing to the accident spot, the locals decried that such fatal accidents had become too frequent at the exit point of the flyover.

The protest beside the victim’s body caused a huge traffic jam. When a large number of vehicles were stuck from Shamshabad to Gaganpahad, the police entered the scene.

Local resident R. Narayana Murthi said "we had met MP Ranjith Reddy seeking to extend the flyover’s stretch. However, works remain incomplete. The road is not suitable for crossing the road as speeding vehicles have claimed many lives in our villages. We demand extending the bridge till Mallika convention, which will be a half-kilometre distance, and make an underpass to cross the road.

Shamshabad ACP P. Ramachander Rao told Deccan Chronicle that people have to walk 200 meters to reach a safe crossing point with barricades and a local traffic police officer. However, some choose not to use it and instead try to cross the road at risky spots.

“We will talk to higher authorities to expedite the construction of a bridge immediately. In the past three months, there have been almost five accidents, including one death”, he said.
