Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, a journalist and his wife hanged themselves after poisoning their two children in the early hours of Thursday in Siddipet. The man was frustrated as he found no luck after trying his hand at different jobs. He is currently working for a regional daily. Preliminary inquiry has revealed that financial woes were the reason behind him taking the extreme step.

The deceased, Hanumantha Rao, 29, a contributor working for a regional newspaper in Kondapaka mandal headquarters, reportedly took the extreme step since the family was in serious financial trouble.

According to Siddipet ACP Rameshwar, Hanumantha Rao was working with a Telugu daily and was under severe financial crisis. “He was burdened by a Rs 10 lakh loan and tried his luck with several professions ranging from setting up a mobile recharge shop, a medical shop to even turning an insurance agent, but in vain. On Wednesday, he and his wife Meena first killed their children aged 3 and 5. He then committed suicide by hanging himself while his wife consumed poison,” he said.

Next day, the neighbours tried knocking their door and when they got no response, broke open the door and found Rao and his children dead while his wife was battling for her life.

The police have registered a case and the dead bodies have been sent for post-mortem. The incident has shocked the small town and senior journalists have expressed grief over the tragic suicide of their fellow colleague.
