SAMBALPUR (ODISHA): Frustrated over the ‘illicit’ relationship between his wife and a 'close' friend, a 25-year-old man brutally killed the paramour on Monday night at Sambalpur in western Odisha, the local police said on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Bapi Das, a small businessman running a stationery shop at Golbazar. According to police, the accused Niranjan Majhi and the deceased were very close.

Bapi used to visit Niranjan’s house regularly and in between he developed “intimate” relations with his wife.

The police, quoting the accused, said although Niranjan asked Bapi to discontinue his relationship with wife, the latter was in no mood to listen to him. Instead, he would meet his wife every day during his absence.

On Monday night, the accused invited Bapi to his house for dinner. After the three had their dinner, Niranjan attacked him with a sharp weapon, inflicting serious injuries. Bapi died due to profuse bleeding.

To hide the evidence, Niranjan packed the body in a big sack and tried to dispose it in the Mahanadi river. However, his plan went haywire as the neighbours got to know about the incident and informed the police.

The local Golbazar police has arrested the accused and sent him to court.
