Hyderabad: RTC bus kills GHMC sanitation worker

Hyderabad: A GHMC sanitation employee, out sweeping the road, was killed in an accident in Amberpet area on Monday. She was hit by a RTC bus and died on the spot.

Municipal administration and urban development minister K Taraka Rama Rao announced Rs10 lakh as compensation to Komuramma’s family. P. Komuramma 29, a resident of Vaddera Basthi in Amberpet was working as a sanitation worker in GHMC on outsourced basis.

Earlier her elder sister worked in the same position. After her sister’s demise from sickness nearly six months ago, Komuramma replaced her at the job.

On Monday morning around 7.45am, Komuramma and few other employees were sweeping the road near Polytechnic College bus stop. RTC bus no AP 29Z 3291 belonging to Falaknuma depot, plying on the Uppal to Koti route, hit Komuramma.

“Komuramma fell on the divider and fell back on the road. The rear right tyre of the bus ran over her, killing her on the spot.”Amberpet SI P Vijaybhasker said.  A case for causing death by negligence was registered against the bus driver Qadir.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam in the area for about forty minutes, blocking the movement of bikes and other vehicles.  Most affected were SSC students, on their way to examinations.

“Our teams rushed immediately to the spot and facilitated traffic movement. Though there was a block for some time, we cleared it as soon as possible and normal movement was restored,” said an official from the Traffic Department.
Municipal Administration minister KTR announced Rs 10 ex gratia to the deceased’s family.

“Of this Rs 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh will be paid by GHMC and Rs 2 lakh each will be paid from CM’s Relief Fund and RTC and One lakh major ex gratia,” an official release from GHMC said. Komuramma’s body was handed over to her family after post mortem.

Save water, GHMC urges citizens
On the account of World Water Day on March 22, the GHMC has appealed to all citizens in the twin cities that everyone must save at least one litre of water every day so that more water can be saved for the summer.

A “Human Chain” will be organised jointly by the city water board and Walk For Water on Tuesday, from 7.30am to 8am marking World Water Day near Vishweshwarayya Statue at Khairatabad Junction.

On April 2, a GHMC council meeting will be held where two members will be nominated from the minorities. One female and one male will be nominated.
