Hyderabad: A chain-snatching gang of six persons, including three women, who targeted women pedestrians by coming close to them in an autorickshaw, has been apprehended by the KPHB police. The police also recovered gold chains worth Rs 1.5 lakh from them.

Three chain snatching offences were reported at KPHB, Kukatpally and Miyapur areas under Cyberabad police commissionerate limits, in a span of one week and the modus operandi was almost similar in all three cases. On November 15, a woman, P. Subhalaxmi, 55, from Hydernagar, lodged a complaint with KPHB police that her gold chain weighing about one-and-a-half tolas was snatched by two men who approached her in an autorickshaw when she was on her way to a temple. The autorickshaw was carrying six persons. Madhapur DCP A. Venkateshwar Rao said the gang was headed by Md Raheem, 21.

“Raheem was released from the jail in June this year after a PD Act was invoked against him. Till then, he used to snatch gold chains along with accused Hymath Basha, 19. Basha introduced him to D. Prabhakar, 20, G. Lakshmi, 24, K. Radhika, 23, and P. Lavanya, 20. The gang used to identify isolated roads and target women pedestrians. While snatching the chains, they use autos, instead of bikes,” said the DCP.

The team recovered gold chains weighing 4.5 tolas.
