Red sanders weighing 60 kg seized

A tea supplier and house keeper from a five star hotel in Andaman turned as top red sanders smuggler owning over Rs 70 crore worth of immovable property, enjoying luxurious life with a flat along with helipad and swimming pool at Chennai.

Chennai: Police have seized red sanders logs weighing 60kg from a house in Tondiarpet on Thursday night.

Police said a raid was conducted by a patrol team from R.K. Nagar on a tip about red sanders being stored in a house in Tondiarpet.

The police team searched the house in Nethaji Nagar at around 10 pm and found the red sanders logs.

The accused, Sahul Hammed (35), had kept the logs for delivering thethem  to a buyer from outside the state. He, however, fled the house on receiving the information of the raid.

However, the police were able to nab his wife Farshad Banu 30. On questioning, she said that Shaul had reportedly procured the logs from Andhra Pradesh and brought them by a lorry on Wednesday.

The R.K Nagar police have registered a case and search for the accused is on. The seized red sanders logs were handed over to the forest range office in Guindy.
