Gold worth Rs 5 crore seized in Malabar

WAYANAD: Kannur, Kozhikode and Kochi units of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in a coordinated operation have seized over 15 kg of gold worth about Rs 5 crore.

On Monday morning, DRI sleuths at Kannur airport seized 11.2 kg of gold from four passengers, hailing from Kannur, Kozhikode, Bangalore and Wayanad, arrived on four separate flights from Dubai and Sharjah.

They seized 3.2 kg of gold and Rs 17.5 lakh in cash from Balussery and Palazhy in Kozhikode district based on the hints from the four taken into custody.
They confiscated 2.9 kg from a native of Panoor arrived on a GoAir flight from Dubai in the wee hours of Monday.

Other seizures were from two passengers arrived from Sharjah at 9 am on the Air India Express flight.  

The passengers from Dubai had hidden the gold in a microwave oven. Gold biscuits were seized from the passenger from Sharjah.  The seizures were made acting upon the secret information DRI officials received. Their interrogators found them as mere agents of a massive network of smuglers. The investigation is on to gather more details from those taken into custody, they said.
