Hyderabad: Alleged negligence of electricity department claimed the life of a farmer in Chief Minister’s constituency Gajwel in Siddipet district on Sunday morning. On Monday, the deceased Manda Mallaiah, 50, came into contact with an 11KV electric line passing low over his fields.

Farmers blamed the electricity department for turning a blind eye to loose cables and demanded compensation for the victim. The police registered a case of suspicious death and have started a probe.

The high tension cables passing through the fields had become loose as one of the poles was bent to one side resulting in the cables hanging very low.
“The cables have been hanging for the past few days. We had informed officials about the cables and requested them to fix a stay wire so that the pole will stand strong, but they did not respond,” said Mallaiah’s elder son Bhaskar.

Farmers in the area alleged that the pole had never been properly fixed and the absence of a stay wire, which is usually needed in fields, was ignored by officials concerned.

“Just because of their carelessness, we lost our fellow farmer. Before such incidents are repeated, officials should act and repair such faulty cables,” they said.
