Hyderabad: Four tried to sell newborn, arrested

Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Special Operations Team sleuths on Tuesday apprehended four persons including a woman for attempting to sell a newborn baby boy for Rs 1 lakh, and rescued the baby.
The Rachakonda police said that they had a tip that Syed Shanawaz, who works as a car driver, was indulging in trafficking of newborn babies to couples wanting a baby. He was contacting poor parents, who were blessed with babies recently offering huge amounts of money to them for giving away their children.
Making Gandhi Hospital as a venue to finalise his deals, Shanawaz used to collect advance money from the buyers and as soon as he received information that a new baby was delivered, he mediated and managed to give the baby to the buyers.
“The accused Shanawaz along with Md Ibrahim, A. Harish and Md Noori Begum came to Ghatkesar along with one Zakhira Begum, who delivered a baby boy. He was waiting to contact the buyers to sell the boy. The team immediately swung into action and rescued the baby, and admitted him to Shishu Vihar. The accused was apprehended and handed over to the Ghatkesar police,” said SOT Additional DCP J. Surender Reddy.
The police said that Shanawaz and Ibrahim were acting as mediators between the buyers and parents of the babies, and were taking commissions for every successful deal. A case has been registered against the accused persons under sections 317, 420 and 109 of the IPC and Section 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
