Hyderabad: A BSNL employee and five members of his family committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Suryapet district on Sunday after his elder son borrowed huge sum of money and went missing.

The deceased were identified as BSNL employee Kasthuri Janardhan, 56, his wife Chandrakala, 50, their younger son K. Ashok, 32, elder daughter-in-law Prabhata, 30, and granddaughters Siri, 5, and Ritwika, 2.

The couple’s elder son, K. Suresh, left for Pune on September 11 and never returned. It was later discovered that he had borrowed a large sum of money. His creditors began pressurising the family for re-payment. Ashok meanwhile was cheated by a gang which gave him a fake appointment letter and an identity card for a job in the Ranga Reddy court in exchange for Rs 14 lakh. The two incidents caused the family great humiliation, police said.

In their suicide note, the family asked for those who had cheated Ashok to be punished. Suresh remains untraceable, and his mobile phone is switched off. The Suryapet police has registered a case and launched an investigation.
