Four cops, including CI, suspended for custodial death

Anantapur: Four police personnel of Rayadurgam Town police station in Anantapur district, including its circle inspector, have been suspended on Tuesday following the death of a person in police custody.

Sources said people of Paithota in Rayadurgam town caught two thieves red-handed when they had been trying to steal sheep from a herd on Monday. They handed over the thieves to Rayadurgam town police station who kept them in the lock up.

One of the two thieves, K. Ramanjineyulu,45, a native of Sanapa village in Atmakur mandal and a habitual offender involved in similar cases, reportedly committed suicide in the lock up, hanging himself from the ceiling with his in the early hours of Tuesday. His body has been shifted to Rayadurgam hospital for post-mortem.

When the news of death in lockup death spread widely, Anantapur SP Dr. Fakkeerappa ordered an inquiry. Following a report by Kalyanadurg DSP B. Sreenivasulu, DIG M. Ravi Prakash issued orders suspending Rayadurgam town circle inspector Sreenivasulu, two constables Madhubabu and Ganganna, and home guard M. Ramesh for negligence of duty.

The DIG has made it clear to all police stations that any suspect in custody of police must be produced in a court within 24 hours of being taken into custody.
