Hyderabad: Auto driver foils chain snatching bid by a notorious criminal

Hyderabad: A 45-year-old autorickshaw driver foiled a chain snatching bid by a notorious criminal at Khairatabad on Saturday.

Shankar who noticed Faizal Shah snatching a chain from a pedestrian chased his bike and intercepted him. In the scuffle that followed, Faizal attacked Shankar with his dagger.

Faizal is involved in around 30 cases across the city and came out of prison a month ago after completing a year’s detention under the PD Act. The police has arrested Faizal.

M. Shankar, a resident of Neredmet, was driving two women from Koti to Kukatpally in his autorickshaw. While passing through Shadan college in Khairatabad, he saw a biker snatch a pedestrian’s chain and speeding away.

Shankar drove his vehicle at high speed, overtook the thief and blocked his bike. When the thief got down, Shankar caught hold of him. The public came to help Shankar, but when Faizal took out a one-and-a-half-feet-long dagger from his abdomen, they stayed away. A scuffle followed between him and Shankar, while others remained spectators. Shankar was injured in his left hand.

“I tried to help the woman who lost her chain and did my duty, but the crowd was looking on silently like watching a movie. Thankfully, the police arrived on the spot and rescued me,’’ Shankar said. He was rushed to hospital, where doctors administered three stitches. He is recovering at home now

Cops found that Faizal was a notorious criminal involved in around 30 cases across the city. The city task force, CCS had been trying to nab him after his release from prison on September 15. After coming out, he started committing crimes and was involved in five robberies in Hyderabad and Rachakonda commissionerates.

Cops said that Faizal always carried a dagger with him and while committing crimes, if anyone resisted, he would threaten them with it. Police arrested Faizal Shah for attempt to murder (307 IPC), attempt to robbery (390 IPC) and under the Arms Act and produced him in court.
