Pudukkottai: Six get life term for killing youth

PUDUKKOTTAI: The district fast track Mahila court here on Friday convicted and sentenced six persons to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a youth who married a girl he loved despite protests from the girl's side. 

According to the prosecution, Krishnakumar of Aladikadu village in Pudukkottai district fell in love with his neighbour Indira and both of them wanted to marry.

However, the parents and relatives of the girl did not accept the idea. Yet, both of them got married in 2004 amid stiff objections, resulting in a quarrel between the two families. 

Subsequently, on July 15, 2007, Krishnakumar was murdered by a gang including the girl's brother Ravi. 

Nagudi police arrested Ravi and his relatives Kailasam and Thavamani and filed a case against them. However, dissatisfied ove Nagudi police handling the case, the deceased father approached the Madurai bench of the Madras HC in 2008, which transferred the case to CB-CID police.

The CB-CID police then arrested Mathi, Chellammal, Marimuthu, and Amutha in addition to the three already held and filed a fresh case against them before the Mahila court. One of the accused Amutha died last year. The judge Ms. Sumathi Sai Priya in her judgment today awarded life sentence to all the six on one count and also convicted and sentenced them to undergo 10 years jail on another count.The judge, however, said the sentences could run concurrently.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of the accused and if they failed to remit the fine, they should spend six more months in jail.
