Kollam: Soji is a housewife made of sterner stuff. She chased a chain-snatcher in the dead of night, knocked him down and regained her chain. And finally, the culprit landed in the lock-up.

The incident happened at Vadasserikkara, near Ranni, in the wee hours of Thursday.

Soji, wife of Mathew Joseph of Mullanparath-adathil, Vadasserikkara, was sleeping keeping her mobile phone and gold chain on a table near her bed. A thief managed to open the window pane of her bedroom, stole her chain with a long pipe and was trying to take the mobile phone when Soji woke up.

She screamed seeing the thief near the window and noticed that her chain weighing four sovereigns was missing. Hearing her scream, the thief fled on a scooter that was kept 100 metres from the house. After telling her husband, she too followed the thief on her scooter.

After chasing him for nearly two kilometres, she knocked him down with her scooter. After a tussle with him on the road, she secured her chain from his pocket. The thief escaped as the local residents started gathering at the spot.

The thief had lost his mobile phone on the road which was recovered by Soji.

The man, after daybreak, came to inspect the spot for the lost mobile phone. He was questioned by the locals and they handed him over to the police. He was identified as Balesh, 36, of Kallu-mparambil, Kacherith-adam, Mothiravayal.

Soji’s husband is running a chicken centre at Vadasserikkara. They have two children Shana and Kripa.
