Chennai: The city police arrested a 34-year-old railway employee on Thursday after he confessed that he strangled his wife with his belt.

According to the police, B Suresh (34), a resident of Gopalapuram Perambur was living with his wife Kalpana (33) and two sons Jonathan Raj (8) and Samuel Raj (9), studying in private schools. On Tuesday Suresh had told his neighbours that Kalpana had fainted and with their help took her to a private hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Kalpana’s parents got into an argument with Suresh at his house and he fled the place. The information was passed on to the Thiru VI Ka police who, with the help of the initial report from the Periyar Nagar government hospital, found the death to be unnatural. Later, during the enquiry, he told the police that Kalpana had killed herself since the couple had misunderstandings.

“On Thursday, the autopsy result arrived and it was shown that Kalpana was strangled to death since her neck bones were broken even before the time she died. On questioning, Suresh confessed,” said an investigation officer. For over a month there has been a dispute in the family, since Kalpana suspected Suresh had an affair as he often avoided coming home on time and did not give money for expenses. On Tuesday morning, the couple’s fight led to violence from her husband who strangled Kalpana with a school belt. Later he lied that she had killed herself, the police said. The Thiru VI Ka police registered a case and arrested Suresh and remanded him in judicial custody.
