Chennai: Customs officials at the Chennai airport seized 665 grams of smuggled gold worth Rs 20 lakhs from a passenger on Saturday night. According to airport sources, officials stopped Sheik Hussain (32) of Chennai, who had arrived from Dubai in an Emirates Airways flight.

“When the officials checked his bag, they found nothing. However, on suspicion, the officials checked him and found three gold pieces concealed in his jeans,” the sources said.

Initially, the officials had let him pass through the green channel after he had declared he had nothing to pay customs duty on.

However, the officials stopped him outside the exit and brought him back to check again. The officials seized the gold worth Rs 20 lakh and arrested Sheik Hussain.

As he had travelled to Gulf countries several times, the officials are interrogating Hussian to determine whether he had smuggled gold on earlier occasions too.
