Chennai: A 19-year-old BSc first year maths student and her 25-year-old-uncle reportedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance and were found dead off Outer Ring Road near Sholavaram, in neighbouring Kancheepuram district.

The deceased were identified as M Sathya, resident of Yechur village, Thirukazhukundram and student of a private arts and sciences college in Thirukazhukundram and R Sasikumar (25), resident of Arunkundram village, Thirukazhunkundram.

Megavan, Sathya’s father who is a farmer, had lodged a missing woman complaint with Mamallapuram police when the girl failed to return home in the evening after she left for college with Sasikumar on Thursday morning.

The Sholavaram police patrol team spotted an abandoned vehicle in a stretch of ORR at around 9.30 pm on Thursday. The team waited for nearly an hour for the biker to return and chose to comb through the bushes sensing foul play. The team subsequently found the duo lying dead, frothing from the mouth. Cops alerted the families with the help of the contact numbers fished out from the girl's mobile and told them to rush to Chromepet GH to where they moved the bodies for post-mortem examinations.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo were in a relationship for some time. Only a week ago, when Megavan's family began looking out for grooms for the girl, did Satya reveal that she was in love with Sasikumar. Since such a relationship with close kin is considered a social taboo in the society, the family vehemently opposed it. They advised the girl to change her mind besides stepping up their hunt for a groom for her.

The family had also advised Sasikumar, a floor tile worker, to convey the message to Satya that to get married to someone else was best for her too. She did not attend college on Thursday. The family, which learnt about her absence from college, attempted to contact her and Sasikumar, but in vain and a complaint was lodged subsequently.

The missing complaint with Mamallapuram Police will be closed while Sholavaram police are pursuing the investigation.
