Kannur: A 38-year-old CPI(M) worker was allegedly hacked to death by an unidentified gang at Payyanur in Kannur, police said on Tuesday.

The assailants who came in a jeep and motorcycles attacked Dhanaraj, a native of Kunnaru in the district, with machetes around 10.30 pm on Monday when he was entering his house, police said.

Though he was rushed to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital by locals, he succumbed on the way, they said.

Police suspect the murder was related to the political violence in the district post elections. Police have registered a case and are investigating.

According to reports, later an RSS worker was also killed in a similar attack. Their houses were attacked and they were stabbed in front of their relatives, the police said.

Both CPM and RSS-BJP have blamed each other for the murders. Both have called for a shutdown in a shutdown in Payannur and surrounding areas.
