Hyderabad: Convicted in 209 cases, held again

During his 40-year-old career, Shankar stole bicycles and wristwatches before he started burgling houses in the areas spread over the Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: A notorious burglar, who was earlier convicted in 209 cases of theft, was arrested along with his accomplice by Karkhana police on Tuesday for involvement in five additional burglaries. Police recovered 10 gm of gold from the two accused and produced them in a court for judicial remand.

According to police, Mantri Shankar, 59, a resident of Chilkalguda, was booked thrice under the Preventive Detention Act and convicted in 209 of the 250 cases of theft booked against him. He had been committing thefts since 1979 when he was just 19 years old. He had also attempted to kill a man when the latter picked up an argument with his mother. During his 40-year-old career, Shankar stole bicycles and wristwatches before he started burgling houses in the areas spread over the Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda.
