Karnataka: Fearing husband's wrath, wife files fake kidnap, rape case

Bengaluru: Scared that her husband would scold her for going home late, a 21-year-old housewife cooked up a kidnap and gangrape story and filed a complaint with the police. The police, who grew suspicious about her claims, counselled her and found out that it was a false case. 

In the complaint filed on Friday, the woman had claimed that she was kidnapped between 5 and 8 pm on Thursday. She stated that while she was walking near Jalahalli village circle, an unknown woman sought her help claiming that her child was injured in a mishap and took her in an auto. When the auto went near a hospital, she again asked the driver to take her to another hospital saying her husband was waiting there. However, even after reaching that hospital, the woman did not stop. Growing suspicious, the complainant asked her to stop but the woman assaulted her and also sprayed something on her face, after which the complainant fainted.

“Later, I was taken to an isolated place where I was shifted from the auto to a van where two men raped me repeatedly. By that time, some local residents came to the spot, and questioned them. As the accused started quarrelling with the locals, I managed to escape from them and reached Yelahanka and got in touch with my parents,” the complainant had claimed. 

As the police started the investigation and started gathering details from the woman, she reportedly kept changing her statement. 

“This made us suspect her claims but she insisted that the incident did occur. We took the help of counselors to make her comfortable and after a few sessions, she revealed that it was a false complaint,” an official said.

“The preliminary probe revealed that she was worried that her husband would scold her for going home late. Also, her husband had asked her to pledge her gold chain and give him cash for his father’s treatment. But she had already pledged it with the help of a relative and used the cash, without telling her husband,” said the official. 

“Fearing the consequences if he came to know about this, she cooked up the kidnap and gang rape story. We will record her statement before the magistrate and then decide whether to initiate action against her for filing a false case,” added the official added.
