Bengaluru traffic police book 4,800 cases against auto drivers
The police targeted autos that did not have valid documents, violated permit conditions, demanded excess fare and refused to go on hire.
Bengaluru: In a major swoop to rein in errant autorickshaw drivers, the Bengaluru traffic police conducted a special drive in the city and booked 4,861 cases on Monday morning.
After complaints from thousands of commuters, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R. Hithendra directed all three traffic divisions to conduct the special drive on Monday morning.
The West division police have booked the highest number of 2,725 cases, while the East division has booked 1,830 cases and the South division 306 cases.
The police targeted autos that did not have valid documents, violated permit conditions, demanded excess fare and refused to go on hire.
A senior police officer said, “There were many complaints of auto drivers refusing to go on hire and demanding excess fare. The drive was started around 9 am and concluded around 6 pm. Traffic policemen deployed in mufti caught erring auto-drivers for various violating traffic rules. The drive will continue in the coming days.”
