Chennai: A 40-year-old woman and her 10-year-old son were found murdered at their house in Perumal Thangal Puthur on the Tiruttani-Arakkonam high road on Sunday night.  Police suspect that the incident could be a murder for gain, since the woman’s jewels were found missing.

Police identified the deceased as Viji alias Veera Lakshmi (40) and her son Pothiraj (10). According to police, D. Vana Perumal (45), resident of Balaji Street, Perumal Thangal Pudur (PT Pudur) in Tiruttani, was a security personnel in a private tyre company in Ichiputhur.  He was living with wife Veeralakshmi and son who was studying in class five in a private school.

The murder came to light when Vana Perumal who had gone on night shift on Sunday, returned home on Monday around 7 am.

He found the door of the house left open, and there was no response from his wife, even though he kept calling her. As he went inside and found his wife and son lying in a pool of blood probably hit by an iron rod or stabbed with a knife, said the police personnel.

Vana Perumal cried for help and neighbours rushed in to help. The duo was rushed to the Tiruttani government hospital, where they were declared ‘brought dead’. Later, while checking the house, Vana Perumal found the cupboard was broken and around 21 sovereigns of gold jewels were missing from the house.

Tiruttani Deputy Superintendent of Police Sekar, and SP Ponni, reached the spot and three special teams were formed to nab the suspects.

Police said the assailants entered the house by breaking open the backdoor. A sniffer dog ran a few meters away from the house, on the main road and stopped.

“We have alerted nearby districts in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, and further investigations are on,” said a police officer. Tiruttani police have registered a case, and investigations are on.
