KAKINADA: Women are giving vent to their anger and resentment over the Union Budget, presented by the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday. They said that they had expected some relief from the government, but Ms Sitharaman has hiked petrol and diesel prices which will make life more difficult for the common man.

Furthermore, the custom duty on gold has been hiked by 2.50 per cent, making it more costly.

Lecturer in English Y. Jaya said that for the past few years, there was a belief that gold prices might fall as the NDA Government favoured women’s welfare. She added that during the upcoming auspicious Sravana Masa, women usually purchase gold ornaments to get the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Now, due to the hike of the custom duty on gold, the prices of gold ornaments will increase and buying gold would be difficult for middle class people. She said that as a woman, Ms Sitharaman should take steps to reduce the price of gold in the country.

V. Satyavathi Devi said that most of the people were of the opinion that BJP meant welfare of middle class people. But, the NDA government’s policies belied the hopes of the people and people are more burdened.
