TIRUPATI: A couple allegedly abducted a five-day-old baby from a maternity hospital in Tirupati, but thanks to the swift action of the police, the infant was reunited with his family within hours. The accused couple, identified as Shanmugam Latha,25, and Vetti Suman,24, from Nagalapuram in Tirupati district, had planned the abduction after Latha had a miscarriage and feared she might not conceive again, police said.

According to DSP Surendra Reddy, on Monday, the couple visited the maternity hospital and carried out their plan. They fled from the hospital after taking the baby boy from the children’s ward in the wee hours.

The parents quickly realised that their child was missing and informed the police. A team led by West Circle inspector Siva Prasad swung into action, forming search teams to locate the baby.

The police located the couple and the baby at Vivekananda Circle on Alipiri Road. The accused were arrested and the baby was returned to his parents. DSP praised the efforts of West sub-inspector T. Obaiah and his team in apprehending the accused individuals.
