Thrissur rapist gets 30-year rigorous imprisonment

Thrissur: The accused in the rape of a  12-year-old girl  was awarded 30 years of rigorous imprisonment  by Thrissur district additional sessions court – 1 (which also acts as POCSO court—Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) on Thursday. Velappan, 68,  of Puthussery village at Kanippayur,  was charged with repeatedly raping  the girl on different days  last year while she came to watch television in  his house. 

The school officials where the girl studied brought the matter before Kunnamkulam police. Judge John K. Illikkadan,  who completed the trial in four months,  imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 on the culprit  and awarded a  compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the victim. The  prosecution was represented by POCSO special public prosecutor Pious Mathew.
