Tirupati: A sub-inspector and a constable were seriously injured as the vehicle of a suspected red sander smuggler gang hit a police jeep near Yelavarthipalli in Dakkili mandal of Tirupati district on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when the Dakkili police tried to stop the smugglers' vehicle while acting on information received from the Rapur Police in Nellore district.

According to Atmakur DSP Kota Reddy, the Rapur Police got information around 7.30 am about the strange movement of a vehicle occupied by 4-5 persons. They pursued and tried to stop the vehicle, but it escaped Rapur limits. Since Rapur police were unable to track down the car, they passed the information on to Dakkili police.

Dakkili sub-inspector Nagaraju and his team attempted to intercept the vehicle at Yelavarthipalli. The accused did not halt the car, but it collided with a police jeep and then disappeared from the scene. Sub-inspector Nagaraju and a constable have been injured.
