Bengaluru: The Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), Karnataka & Goa, has rubbished the allegations made by Hubbali-Dharwad Independent candidate Gopal Kulkarni that the tax raids on his premises were due to a “political rivalry”.

DGIT sources said that the police had caught eight people, who were reportedly distributing cash in Hangal constituency, and seized large amounts of cash from them. They later called the Income Tax officers for a detailed inquiry.

“On interrogation, the men revealed that they were given cash for distribution by a party candidate in Hangal constituency. The candidate is a promoter of a chain of gold jewellery shops. For a detailed inquiry, DGIT officials visited the chain of shops. One of the retail stores is being run by Kulkarni as a franchisee.

The investigation in the case of Kulkarni is a direct consequence of the investigation in the case of the Hangal candidate,” said DGIT spokesperson, adding that there is no “other background to the case”
