Bengaluru: In a bizarre incident, a girl from Chikkamagaluru district committed suicide in January 2018 after anonymous callers questioned her about her WhatsApp profile picture, which is also referred to as ‘DP’.

The anonymous caller threatened her saying that the photo, which showed her dressed as a Muslim girl, was misleading and that she should change it as it was not proper for a Hindu girl.

The case recently surfaced before the High Court when the second accused in the case, Anil, facing abetment to suicide charges approached the court seeking bail on the grounds that he was innocent and was in no way connected to the case.

During the hearing it was also revealed that the girl had informed her father about the anonymous call and her father had called up the unknown number. The anonymous caller had suggested to the father too that his daughter should change her WhatsApp profile picture.

In the complaint, it was alleged that on the night of January 5, the girl refused to eat or drink. The next day morning she was found hanging in her room.

She had left a suicide note, in which she had said that some Hindu boys were threatening her and that she had no relationship with any Muslim boy.

The prosecution objected to Anil’s bail petition, saying that the girl’s death note had clearly referred to “some Hindu boys”.

After hearing the case, the High Court granted bail to the accused with the condition that he should not tamper with evidence in the case and that he should appear before the concerned court regularly.
