Karwar: The Kaiga Generating Station is moving into a key expansion phase, with construction activities steadily progressing on Units 5 and 6.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, Kaiga Station Site Director B Vinod Kumar said that the excavation activities are complete.
The construction of the 5th and 6th units of 700 MW each at Kaiga is targeted to be completed by 2030.
“Construction activities at Kaiga project 5&6 have gathered pace. The Turbine package is awarded to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The Nuclear package is awarded to Megha Engineers and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL). The first pour of concrete is expected to commence after the current monsoon season,” he said.
Meanwhile KGS-1 is under shutdown from April 1, 2025 for carrying out En-Masse Coolant Channel Replacement (EMCCR) and En-Masse Feeder Replacement (EMFR) activity as a part of life extension. The period of EMCCR and EMFR is expected to last for about Eighteen (18) months. After completion of EMCCR and EMFR activity of KGS-1, EMCCR and EMFR activity of KGS-2 will be taken up. KGS-2 would be the longest operated PHWR prior to EMCCR and EMFR activities in India.
The four units in operation have been performing at their rated capacity and have set benchmarks comparable with international standards. Since the commercial operation of the units, the Kaiga site has generated a total of 1.3 Lakh Million Units and has avoided the generation of about 1.2 lakh tonnes of CO2 to the atmosphere.
