Raipur: The police cracked the case relating to mysterious deaths of eight people in the village of Kherva in Chhattisgarh’s Balodabazar district over a period of four months by arresting a local shopkeeper, who is described by the cops as ‘psycho killer’.
The accused Ramsahay Jaiswal (46) allegedly broke down after intense interrogation and narrated the modus operandi of killing his eight victims, police said on Thursday.
He had served liquor laced with borax powder, a toxic substance used for killing rodents, to each of his victims to kill them, the investigation has revealed, according to the police.
According to the investigators, the motives behind each alleged murder were silly such as election disputes, public taunts, verbal abuse, suspicions involving his wife, superstition about sorcery, a land dispute and a loan of Rs 50,000 taken by him from one of his victims, which he never wanted to repay.
“The idea of eliminating his victims by using borax powder struck his mind after watching the poaching of birds by a poacher who used to mix the same substance in the water to kill the birds”, the police said.
He had procured the borax powder from a villager by saying that he wanted to kill the rodents in his house.
He then tested it with a dog to kill it.
He started using the experiment with his victims, one after another, over four months, to kill them, police said.
He had allegedly murdered his first victim on February 6 by serving him liquor laced with borax powder, according to the police. He had allegedly poisoned his last victim to death in a similar manner on May 14, police said.
One of his victims had however miraculously survived after being given timely medical treatment, police said.
The villagers got suspicious over the deaths of eight people and lodged a complaint with the police on June six alleging that the accused might be practicing black magic to get hidden treasure by killing the eight people.
Police later exhumed seven bodies, buried after their deaths, as per the customs of Kabir Panth sect, they belonged to and sent the bodies for postmortem and forensic tests to the Dr. B R Ambedkar Hospital in Raipur.
One of the eight deceased men had been cremated.
Surprisingly, the accused used to accompany the kin of his victims to the hospital and then to the graveyard for the burial of bodies after their deaths, police said.
According to Balodabazar district superintendent of police O P Sharma, cases have been registered against Ramsahay Jaiswal for eight murders and one attempt to murder.
