RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh high court has rejected the plea by former chief minister and senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel to turn down a petition seeking to declare his election to the Assembly null and void.
The high court has fixed June 23 to start regular hearing in the case.
BJP Lok Sabha member from Durg in Chhattisgarh Bijay Baghel had filed a petition in the Chhattisgarh high court seeking to declare the former chief minister’s election from the Patan Assembly constituency in 2024 null and void, alleging violation of model code of conduct of polls by him then.
The MP, who is a relative of the former chief minister, in his petition, alleged that Mr. Baghel held a roadshow asking for votes from the electorates in Patan seat before polling in violation of the model code of conduct of the elections.
The Congress leader however argued that the allegation lacked evidence while pleading the court to reject it.
The single bench of Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal however dismissed Mr. Baghel’s plea, noting that there is merit in the petition to hear the case.
The former chief minister on Wednesday said that he would move the supreme court to challenge the verdict of the Chhattisgarh high court.
A similar plea by Mr. Baghel was earlier rejected by the Chhattisgarh high court.
He had however moved the supreme court against the verdict by the high court then.
The supreme court had then rejected Mr. Baghel’s plea directing him to file a fresh petition in the Chhattisgarh high court seeking the maintainability of his plea.
Following this, Mr. Baghel had moved the high court.
