RAIPUR: Around 200 bats died due to the heatwave in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district, a forest officer said on Sunday.

The birds were found dead on the ground and on a tree near the pond in the village of Naukonia under Pali panchayat on Saturday.

The locals informed the forest department on the death of the bats near the village pond, leading a team of forest officials to visit the spot to take stock of the situation, according to Katghora divisional forest officer Nishant Kumar.

The bats were suspected to have died due to heatwave, he said.

The migratory birds visit the village and perch on the trees near the village pond between February and March every year.

Temperature in Korba district recorded 44 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Heatwave conditions prevailed across Chhattisgarh with temperature hovering between 44 degrees Celsius to 46 degrees Celsius in many places in the state in the last couple of weeks.

The Met department has cautioned that the heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in isolated pockets of the state over the next five days.
