NEW DELHI: The government on Friday said that the Centre has finalised to borrow Rs 7.86 lakh crore from dated securities including sovereign green bonds (SGrBs) of Rs 15,000 crore in the second half of this financial year. The government’s plan comes at a time when bond market participants are closely watching the borrowing plan amid changes in banking-system liquidity and movements in government bond yields.

As per the official statement, the Centre will borrow Rs 7.86 lakh crore in the second half (H2) of FY27, including Rs 15,000 crore through sovereign green bonds. However, the government has cut the total borrowing for the current financial year by a whopping Rs 1,20,494 crore.

As per the government, the borrowing will be executed through 23 weekly auctions. This is expected to take the total borrowing for the full year of FY27 to Rs 15.9 lakh crore through dated securities, as against the Budget estimates of Rs 17.2 lakh crore,” according to the finance ministry statement.

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in the Budget for 2026-27 had proposed to borrow Rs 17.2 lakh crore to fund its fiscal deficit projected at 4.3 percent of the GDP. During the first half ending this month, the government would be mobilising Rs 8,13,506 crore from bonds, slightly higher than the target of Rs 8 lakh crore, to fund the revenue gap.

“The gross market borrowing of Rs 7,86,000 crore in the second half of FY27 would be completed through 23 weekly auctions. The market borrowing will be spread across securities with tenors of 3 years, 5 years, 7 years, 10 years, 15 years, 30 years, 40 years and 50 years,” the statement said.

“The share of borrowing (including SGrBs) under different maturities will be 3-year (6.9 per cent), 5-year (12.1 per cent), 7-year (9.1 per cent), 10-year (26.3 per cent), 15-year (17.6 per cent), 30-year (9.2 per cent), 40-year (8.9 per cent) and 50-year (9.9 per cent),” it added.
