New Delhi: Foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS nations arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for the two-day BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting beginning Thursday.
Participants include Sergey Lavrov, along with ministers from Brazil and South Africa. Seyed Abbas Araghchi is also expected to attend. Delegations from partner countries will take part in the discussions.
A meeting of BRICS Sherpas was held ahead of the FMM. The visiting ministers are also scheduled to call on Narendra Modi.
The sessions, chaired by external affairs minister S. Jaishankar, will focus on global and regional issues. Themes include “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability” and “Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System”.
Officials said a joint statement may be considered at the conclusion of the meeting on Friday.
As current BRICS chair, India is expected to navigate differences within the grouping, particularly over the West Asia conflict. India has earlier indicated that evolving a common position on the issue remains difficult given the involvement of some member countries.
The BRICS grouping comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with newer members Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Representation from Saudi Arabia remains uncertain.
The outcome of the meeting will indicate the extent of consensus among members on key global issues.
