BHOPAL: The family of Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based businessman brutally murdered during his honeymoon in May last year in Meghalaya allegedly by his newly married wife Sonam and four of her associates, strongly felt that a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case would alone bring the culprits to book.

The family alleged flaws in the investigation into the case, saying that they were somehow not comfortable with the course of the inquiry into the case.

“The ground on which Sonam was granted bail by the Shillong court in April this year has strengthened our apprehension about the investigation”, Vipin, elder brother of slain Raja Raghuvanshi told this newspaper on Monday.

Sonam, the alleged mastermind in the murder case, was granted bail by a Shillong court in April 2026 primarily due to procedural and legal lapses by the police, specifically the failure to properly communicate the grounds of her arrest.

The court found that documents wrongly cited a non-existent section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), violating her constitutional rights.

The family feared that Sonam could destroy the evidence and influence the witnesses while out on bail, he said.

According to him, his family are trying to get an appointment with Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav to plead him to take up the matter with the Centre to order a CBI probe into the case.

Raja Raghuvanshi married Sonam in Indore on May 11, 2025 and the couple left for honeymoon in Meghalaya ten days later.

Raja went missing during the honeymoon in Shillong on May 23, 2025 and his body was found ten days later on June two in a gorge in Shillong.

Four people, including Raja’s widow Sonam and her alleged boyfriend Raj Kushwaha, were arrested in connection with the murder.

While Sonam was granted bail in April this year, three others are currently lodged in a jail in Meghalaya.
