Amid Repeated Disruptions, Odisha Assembly Adjourned Sine Die

BHUBANESWAR: Amid repeated disruptions by the Opposition, the Monsoon Session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on Monday, with the House functioning for only five of its scheduled nine working days.
The Question Hour could not be taken up on any of the five days due to protests and disruptions over the amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
Chief Whip of the ruling BJP and Boudh MLA Saroj Kumar Pradhan moved a motion seeking adjournment of the House sine die, citing the prevailing flood situation in the state. BJP MLAs Upasana Mohapatra and Laxman Bag supported the motion.
Despite the disruptions, four important Bills were passed during the session, including the Odisha State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Bill, 2026, the Indian Stamp (Odisha Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Odisha Jan Vishwas Bill, 2026.
During Zero Hour, ruling party members raised the flood situation and highlighted the difficulties being faced by people in the affected areas. They said several houses had been damaged and agricultural land affected by the floods.
The ruling party members urged Opposition legislators to visit the affected areas and assess the situation on the ground, while calling for constructive discussions and suggestions on relief and assistance for the affected people.
They also appealed to the Opposition to refrain from sloganeering and disruptions and instead focus on measures to address the difficulties faced by flood-affected people.
The Monsoon Session commenced on September 22 and was originally scheduled to continue until October 3, with nine working days. However, the House functioned for only five days.
Meanwhile, speaking about the Mahanadi water situation, Odisha revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari said there was currently no major threat from the river.
